Team Description

Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY)

DESY is a national research center in Germany. Under the roof of the Helmholtz association, it conducts a broad spectrum of inter-disciplinary scientific research in three main areas: particle and high energy physics; photon science; and the development, construction and operation of particle accelerators. At the same time, DESY also plays a major role in the training of young scientists, mostly through the strategic partnership PIER with Hamburg University and with other Universities in the region.

DESY Theory Group

As one of the leading centres for Theoretical Physics in Europe, the DESY Theory Group carries out an active research programme on all aspects of modern particle theory, including phenomenology, particle cosmology, astrophysics, string theory and mathematical physics. The group is embedded into DESY’s vast particle physics programme. In addition, it is part of the Wolfgang Pauli Centre for theoretical physics.

String Theory Group

Research in the string theory group includes the study of exactly solvable string backgrounds, integrable systems as well as perturbative and non-perturbative aspects of quantum field theory. Thereby it explores interfaces to high energy physics, general relativity, statistical physics and mathematics. In the framework of Hamburg’s Center for Mathematical Physics the string theory group contributes to the Master in Mathematical Physics and the Graduate School "Mathematics inspired by String Theory and Quantum Field Theory".

The DESY string theory group is the central coordinator of the EU-funded Marie Curie Initial Training Network GATIS.
